AI Hacks Remove Smart TV Ads and Tracking, but Can Brick Sets

AI tools are helping owners strip smart TV ads, tracking and bloatware, but unfinished hacks can disable packages, stall midway or brick some devices.

Summary

AI-assisted projects are letting owners remove smart TV ads, tracking and bloatware, accelerate launchers and redesign home screens. Smart TVs use Automatic Content Recognition, or ACR, to identify programming through screenshots, audio clips or digital fingerprints, supporting viewing-data sales and personalized advertising. Wider adoption could disrupt that business.

On October 17, 2026, Gathin T. said Claude Code found his parents’ Xiaomi TV over Wi-Fi, removed 25 packages and built a simple Apple TV-style launcher after a sponsored ad appeared before Netflix. He said several thousand people repeated the process within two days on Xiaomi, TCL, Sony, Fire TV and LG sets, plus projectors. His cleanyourtv project promises similar cleanup for any Android TV or Google TV without root access and allows restoration of factory defaults.

On October 18, Muzammil Yasin Sabuwala introduced dumbtv, which directs an AI agent to its GitHub repository. Tested on Fire TV Edition and Android or Google TV hardware from Sony, TCL, Philips, Hisense, Xiaomi and Shield, it was built with Deepseek V4.1 Flash, Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5, with more model support planned. Ryan Doyle said Claude Code removed ads, bloatware and lag while customizing his screensaver. Mihir Gupta disabled 25 apps, replaced a 192 MB stock launcher with an 83 MB custom version and added rotating wallpapers. These works remain unfinished: users report difficult prompting, disabled packages, a bricked Android TV and a stalled Fire TV setup. ATV Launcher, Projectivity Launcher and FLauncher offer established Android-based alternatives.

Positives

  • 25 Xiaomi packages were removed over Wi-Fi before Claude Code built Gathin T.’s simpler Apple TV-style launcher.
  • Several thousand people reportedly replicated cleanyourtv within two days across multiple television brands and projectors.
  • Cleanyourtv requires no root access and allows users to restore their televisions to factory defaults.
  • Dumbtv has completed end-to-end testing on Fire TV Edition and Android or Google TV hardware from six named manufacturers.
  • Mihir Gupta replaced a 192 MB stock launcher with an 83 MB custom launcher after disabling 25 unwanted apps.

Risks & concerns

  • One Claude user reportedly bricked an Android TV, while another became stuck midway through modifying a Fire TV.
  • AI agents can disable important packages or break television functions when prompts or generated instructions are inaccurate.
  • Some users found that a simple request to hack their television failed, forcing them to write more complex prompts.
  • Smart TV advertising businesses risk losing viewing data and personalized-ad inventory if these tools gain mainstream adoption.
  • Dumbtv and cleanyourtv remain works in progress as users test platforms and propose fixes.
