Summary

Trucks VC fielded pitches from 81 new AV startups in 2026, two thirds more than 2025 and above 2016 and 2017. Puneeth Meruva says foundation models enable end to end systems that generalize across environments, cutting deployment time and cost; Nvidia’s Alpamayo and Qwen’s vision language action models further lower entry barriers. Startups can launch within months after raising under $1 million. Alongside construction, warehouse, agriculture and mining uses, more target robotaxis and Waymo through regional or route niches. Meruva expects more pitches in 2027.

Massachusetts accelerator Re:Build, co-founded by former Amazon commercial CEO Jeff Wilke and parent of Slate Auto, raised $2.1 billion, led by General Catalyst and JPMorganChase’s Strategic Investment Group, for hard tech manufacturing and new industrial startups. Bedrock Robotics raised $600 million at a $4.1 billion valuation in a Series C co-led by CapitalG and Emergence Capital. DoorDash agreed to acquire Instacart for $17 billion, but logged only a few hundred third-quarter AI agent orders. PreScalar raised $7 million for factory software and testing infrastructure; Elroy Air hired Jeremy Hux as CFO ahead of going public.

Ford announced two EV chargers enabling its forthcoming Fathom pickup to power a home or grid. GM agreed to a $220 million settlement with 36 states over allegations it illegally sold driving and location data, following California and Federal Trade Commission settlements. Kodiak AI will deliver 75 driverless highway trucks to DTL Transport from 2028, its first binding commercial deal. R2 demand lifted Rivian’s 2026 delivery floor from 65,000 to 67,000, with the ceiling unchanged at 70,000; its $5.8 billion Volkswagen Group venture will add AI assistants, without confirmed extra investment. Tesla is using Turo to promote Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Toyota will build Waymo-integrated bZ4X vehicles in Japan for robotaxis in Japan, the U.K. and other markets, potentially leading to licensing in privately owned vehicles.

Positives

  • 81 AV startup pitches in 2026 put Trucks VC two thirds above 2025 and beyond the 2016 and 2017 boom years.

  • Re:Build raised $2.1 billion to expand hard tech manufacturing and launch new industrial companies.
  • Bedrock Robotics secured $600 million at a $4.1 billion valuation, underscoring investor demand for autonomous vehicle technology.
  • Kodiak AI secured its first binding commercial driverless highway deal, covering 75 trucks for DTL Transport from 2028.
  • Rivian raised its 2026 delivery floor to 67,000 vehicles after strong demand for the R2.

Risks & concerns

  • A growing group of robotaxi startups must challenge Waymo, even if they limit competition to particular regions or routes.
  • DoorDash received only a few hundred third-quarter orders from AI agents despite agreeing to acquire Instacart for $17 billion.
  • GM will pay $220 million to 36 states over allegations involving the illegal sale of driving behavior and location data.
