Amazon Tops 1 Million Warehouse Robots as Worker Safety and Hiring Questions Grow

Amazon's 1 million warehouse robots boost speed and cut severe injuries, but faster work raises repetitive strain risks and could reduce US hiring by 2027.

Summary

Amazon operates more than 1 million warehouse robots alongside over 1.5 million full and part time employees, making tens of millions of same day and one day deliveries daily for 200 million Prime subscribers. Since acquiring Kiva Systems in 2012 and renaming it Amazon Robotics, it has announced plants in Austin, Texas, and Greenwood, Indiana, each expected to create more than 300 jobs. Sequoia stores items up to 75 percent faster; Hercules and Titan move pods, Proteus works near people, and DeepFleet predicts congestion.

CFO Brian Olsavsky said Amazon would more than double its single digit thousands of robotic arms in 2026. Robin, tested in 2021 and launched in Lakeland, Florida, in 2022, trained on 394,000 actions; machine learning raised pick success from 92.28 to 93.73 percent, preventing about 16,500 failures per million picks, while a 2 million pick experiment cut failures 20 percent in work presented in July 2025. Cardinal, operating in Nashville since November 2022, packs parcels up to 50 pounds. Sparrow uses foundation models for hundreds of millions of products; touch enabled Vulcan started in Spokane and Hamburg in 2025 and is due to scale in 2027.

OSHA says US warehouse injuries and illnesses exceed twice the all industry average among nearly 2 million workers. Strategic Organizing Center reports from 2021 and a 2024 Senate HELP investigation led by Sen. Bernie Sanders linked robotic pace to injuries. Amazon says recordable incidents fell 43 percent and lost time incidents 70 percent since 2019. An April 2025 ILR Review study of over 150 warehouses found robotic sites had 40 percent fewer severe injuries but 77 percent more less severe repetitive strain injuries. Advanced sites employ 30 percent more technical staff, while October 2025 documents projected 160,000 fewer US hires by 2027 and 600,000 by 2033, which Amazon called one group's view. The Amazon Labor Union seeks a Safety Bill of Rights.

Positives

  • Sequoia identifies and stores warehouse items up to 75 percent faster than previous processes.
  • Robin's machine learning achieved 93.73 percent pick success, preventing about 16,500 failures across 1 million picks.
  • Robotic Amazon warehouses recorded 40 percent fewer severe injuries than legacy fulfillment centers in the April 2025 ILR Review study.
  • Amazon's global recordable incident rate has fallen 43 percent and its lost time incident rate has dropped 70 percent since 2019.
  • Advanced robotic fulfillment centers employ 30 percent more reliability, maintenance and engineering workers.
  • Austin and Greenwood robot factories are each expected to create more than 300 jobs.

Risks & concerns

  • Robotic fulfillment centers recorded 77 percent more less severe injuries linked to repetitive physical strain.
  • US warehouse injuries and illnesses remain more than twice the average across all industries.
  • October 2025 internal documents projected 160,000 fewer US hires by 2027 and 600,000 fewer by 2033.
  • Strategic Organizing Center findings and a 2024 Senate investigation linked robot driven productivity pressure to faster work and injuries.
  • Collaborative robots can dictate employees' working pace while operating in close physical proximity.
