Summary

On October 8, 2026, Anthropic committed $150 million over three years to the Genesis Mission, a federal AI initiative for accelerating scientific and technological discovery. The money will extend Claude across more than 15 participating agencies, including NASA, the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, and several hundred research projects. Announced at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy's Science: A New Golden Age Summit in Washington, DC, the expansion follows Anthropic's partnership with the US Department of Energy and Genesis Mission, announced last December, and its subsequent deployment of Claude to national laboratory scientists.

Anthropic will supply Claude, Claude Code and API credits, collaborate with agencies and laboratories on administration priorities including fusion energy and quantum computing, and provide training, onboarding and technical support, including help launching new agencies' first Genesis Mission projects. The pledge extends Anthropic's 2026 science push: Claude Science, an AI workbench integrating commonly used research tools and packages; 10,000 free or discounted Claude seats for academic scientists; expanded AI for Science credits for high-impact projects; and a research preview of the Model Hardware Standard, a shared specification for AI agents to operate laboratory instruments safely.

Positives

  • $150 million over three years will support AI access, training and technical assistance for federal scientists.
  • More than 15 agencies, including NASA, NIH and NSF, will gain expanded access to Claude.
  • Several hundred Genesis Mission projects will receive Claude, Claude Code and API credits.
  • Fusion energy and quantum computing are among the administration priorities targeted for collaboration.
  • 10,000 free or discounted Claude seats have already been opened to academic scientists.

Risks & concerns

  • Exact funding allocations among agencies, laboratories and projects have not been disclosed.
  • The commitment sets no measurable targets for scientific results or productivity gains.
  • The Model Hardware Standard remains a research preview rather than a finalized specification.
  • Details remain limited on which several hundred Genesis Mission projects will receive support.
