Apple Targets Local AI With M6 Mac Mini and 512GB M5 Ultra Mac Studio

Apple refreshed the Mac mini and Mac Studio on August 25, 2026, without redesigning either desktop, introducing M6, its first 2nm Mac system-on-a-chip, and M5 Ultra, its most powerful option for most workloads. macOS 26.2 added low-latency Thunderbolt 5 connections for distributed MLX inference last December, allowing hobbyists, developers and researchers to chain Macs for open-weight Qwen and DeepSeek models too large for typical hardware such as an average MacBook Pro. Mac mini starts at $899 with M6 and 16GB memory or $1,699 with M5 Pro; Mac Studio starts at $2,499 with M5 Max or $5,499 with M5 Ultra. Preorders opened August 25, shipping begins September 22 with macOS 27 Golden Gate, and the 512GB configuration follows in late October.
