Barcelona Supercomputing Center Expands Sovereign AI Access With NVIDIA
Barcelona Supercomputing Center opens sovereign AI services to startups, linking MareNostrum 5 with NVIDIA Inception training, tools and venture capital links.
Summary
As of October 20, 2026, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center’s AI Factory Accelerator Programme is fully operational after its pilot, giving startups sovereign compute, technical support and training. Some services are now accessible through the NVIDIA Inception portal, complementing the programme with NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute open courses, business mentoring, venture capital connections and other resources. BSC AI Factory, Spain’s first and among Europe’s first AI factories, has delivered more than 800 services to private and public sector clients since April 2025. An upcoming NVIDIA accelerated computing extension of MareNostrum 5 will provide supercomputing through BSC and other European AI factories.
Pilot AI Champions Qatium, OneCareAI and Avatia are NVIDIA Inception members. Qatium’s platform serves more than 250 utilities in 16 countries; its early-production Neural Water Intelligence uses proprietary models trained on MareNostrum 5 with NVIDIA accelerated computing, cuGraph, PhysicsNeMo and Nemotron open models. BSC spin-off OneCareAI used NVIDIA NIM microservices to build technology designed to find hidden atrial fibrillation in apparently normal ECGs, helping clinicians identify stroke risk. Avatia built a voice-first, multi-agent system using NIM, Nemotron 3 and open source NeMo Curator to support pharmaceutical sales representatives and give doctors curated, transparent medicine information. Agrikola AI, Elna Health, Lokutor, Montevive AI, Oppy, Pack2Earth and Up2Smart span precision agriculture, medical imaging and knowledge access, speech, enterprise security, sales intelligence and sustainable packaging, targeting applications including breast cancer subtype detection, robotic crop protection and biobased compostable alternatives to petroleum plastic.
Positives
- More than 800 services have reached private and public sector clients since BSC AI Factory launched in April 2025.
- Over 250 utilities across 16 countries already use Qatium’s water-network platform.
- Some BSC AI Factory services are now available through the NVIDIA Inception portal.
- OneCareAI’s technology is designed to expose hidden atrial fibrillation in apparently normal ECGs before a stroke occurs.
- Seven additional startups address agriculture, healthcare, speech, security, sales intelligence and sustainable packaging.
Risks & concerns
- Only some BSC AI Factory services are currently accessible through the NVIDIA Inception portal.
- No launch date or computing capacity is specified for the upcoming MareNostrum 5 extension.
- Qatium’s Neural Water Intelligence remains in early production rather than broad deployment.
- No clinical accuracy, validation or deployment figures are provided for OneCareAI’s atrial fibrillation technology.
- Avatia’s intended treatment benefits are described without commercial adoption or performance data.
