Barclays Expands Anthropic Claude, Targets Majority Engineer Adoption in 2027
Barclays expands Anthropic’s Claude bankwide across coding, customer support and markets, targeting 50% developer adoption by end-2026 and a majority in 2027.
Summary
Published Sept. 30 and dated Oct. 1, 2026, Barclays’ expanded Anthropic partnership will deploy secure, enterprise-grade Claude systems across the British universal bank’s global operations. Claude will accelerate software development, modernize legacy platforms and improve efficiency, software quality and customer service. Barclays expects Claude Code to reach 50% of developers by the end of 2026 and most software engineers in 2027, with governance, security controls and human oversight applied across the rollout.
The Claude-powered Colleague Knowledge Assistant, live since 2025 through a retrieval-augmented generation architecture, has handled more than one million searches for over 16,000 employees serving more than 20 million UK retail customers. In Global Markets, Claude models classify, enrich and route about 120,000 incoming emails daily, reducing manual handling and preparing requests for operations teams. Group Co-Chief Operating Officers Anne Marie Darling and Craig Bright expect AI to reduce routine work and become more agentic across building, testing, securing and operating technology. Anthropic Chief Commercial Officer Paul Smith called the deployment a major UK milestone, while Barclays is targeting long-term gains in productivity, resilience and client outcomes.
