Databricks Buys Row Zero in Push for Secure AI Spreadsheets
Databricks acquires Row Zero to unite secure, million-row spreadsheets with Genie AI, as its 2026 startup buying spree accelerates after $5B funding round.
Summary
Databricks acquired early-stage cloud spreadsheet startup Row Zero on September 24, 2026, after its finance team combined the product with Genie, Databricks’ AI agent. Row Zero supports more than 1 million live rows, while Genie lets users ask natural-language questions about Databricks data, including profit margins and sales prospects. The integration will let analysts manipulate data through familiar spreadsheet formulas while keeping it secured inside Databricks, rather than exporting it to widely shared, less secure spreadsheets or learning separate business intelligence software. CEO Ali Ghodsi said spreadsheets, BI and agents are a natural combination.
Terms were not disclosed. Row Zero, founded by former AWS and Tableau engineers, raised $10 million in May 2025 at an estimated $40 million valuation. Databricks raised another $5 billion in August and reached a $7 billion annualized revenue run rate. Its other 2026 acquisitions include agent evaluation and reinforcement learning company Quotient AI and interactive notebook startup SiftD.ai in March, AI security operations company Panther in June, previously valued at $1.4 billion in 2021, and Electric in August. Electric makes PGlite, a lightweight Postgres database for agents running locally on devices. Ghodsi said Databricks intends to make many more acquisitions.
