Summary

On DoorDash’s third quarter 2026 earnings call Thursday, cofounder and CEO Tony Xu said third party AI agents had generated only several hundred orders since becoming available, versus just under 1 billion total DoorDash orders in the quarter. Xu sees agents helping with long consideration purchases and proactive background work, but says customers still bring simple food orders directly to DoorDash.

DoorDash launched its open standard Model Context Protocol, or MCP, connector less than a month earlier, and access remains confined to a small group of early beta partners using it mainly for corporate lunches. Unconnected agents must work through the web interface. The total excludes Ask DoorDash, its internal AI launched in summer 2026, which can turn a recipe photo into a cart or suggest dinner for a family of four. DoorDash has not disclosed usage, but said in September 2026 that Ask DoorDash builds baskets five times faster, lifts average basket value nearly 50%, adds about 60% more unique items, and sends nearly half of orders to local restaurants the customer has never tried. Pizza Hut’s online ordering began in 1994 and now accounts for more than half its orders, leaving room for agent adoption to grow, though Xu warned against resisting technology or becoming delusional about demand.

Positives

  • Ask DoorDash builds shopping baskets five times faster than the standard ordering process.
  • Ask DoorDash orders average nearly 50% higher basket value and about 60% more unique items.
  • Nearly half of Ask DoorDash orders introduce customers to local restaurants they have not previously tried.
  • DoorDash’s open standard MCP connector gives approved third party agents a standardized route into its ordering platform.
  • Tony Xu sees potential for agents to handle long consideration purchases and proactive background work.

Risks & concerns

  • Third party AI agents have generated only several hundred orders, compared with just under 1 billion DoorDash orders in third quarter 2026.
  • MCP access remains limited to a small group of early beta partners and is used mainly for corporate lunches.
  • Agents without the MCP connector must expend more effort ordering through DoorDash’s web interface.
  • DoorDash has not disclosed detailed usage figures for its internal Ask DoorDash feature.
  • Tony Xu cautioned that companies should not become delusional about weak early adoption.
