Exein Raises $270 Million at $1.7 Billion Valuation to Secure Physical AI
Italian cybersecurity startup Exein raises $270 million at a $1.7 billion valuation to secure physical AI devices and fund acquisitions and global expansion.
Summary
On September 15, 2026, Rome based Exein became Italy’s latest unicorn after raising $270 million in a significantly oversubscribed round led by Headline at a $1.7 billion valuation. Founded in 2018 by CEO Gianni Cuozzo, CFO Gerardo Gagliardo and CTO Giovanni Alberto Falcione, Exein works with original equipment manufacturers and silicon vendors to embed self defense into devices. It says it protects more than 2 billion connected products across aerospace, industrial automation, automotive manufacturing, energy, healthcare and semiconductors. Photon, its latest runtime security product, aims to stop kernel level attacks.
Exein expects physical AI to expand demand across robots, drones, self driving cars, sensors, smart appliances and other edge devices. Its valuation is 30 times its Series B level two years ago and has more than doubled since its December 2025 equity and debt financing, which followed a Series C earlier in 2025. Exein says revenue is growing 400% year on year, with Asia Pacific producing half. It will use the round for acquisitions, product expansion and hiring across the United States and Asia Pacific.
Cuozzo says unguarded open source AI models are making attacks on physical devices cheaper, easier and faster, including rising machine speed attacks. Exein is training a foundational physical AI security model on machine data and telemetry for release in the first quarter of 2027. Operating across three continents remains its main challenge. European Union Cyber Resilience Act reporting obligations began in September 2026, before the law takes full effect in December 2027 and requires manufacturers to secure digital products against cyber threats.
Positives
- $270 million from a Headline led round gives Exein capital for acquisitions, product expansion and international hiring.
- More than 2 billion connected devices are already protected by Exein across six security critical industries.
- 400% year on year revenue growth indicates strong demand, with Asia Pacific generating half of company revenue.
- Photon extends Exein’s portfolio with runtime protection designed to prevent attacks at the device kernel.
- First quarter 2027 is the target for Exein’s foundational security model trained on machine data and telemetry.
- December 2027 enforcement of the EU Cyber Resilience Act could increase manufacturer demand for embedded device security.
Risks & concerns
- Unguarded open source AI models are making novel attacks against physical devices cheaper and easier to execute.
- Machine speed attacks are already increasing, potentially overwhelming security approaches designed for slower human directed threats.
- Three continent operations have been Exein’s main challenge as it expands across Europe, the United States and Asia Pacific.
- 400% annual growth may be difficult to sustain as operational complexity and hiring requirements increase.
- EU Cyber Resilience Act obligations expose manufacturers to additional compliance demands before full enforcement in December 2027.
