Google Gives Schools Gemini Controls but Refuses AI-Free Search

Google will let K-12 schools disable Gemini but keep Search, although Search still requires AI Overviews, AI Mode or Guided Learning for student accounts.

Summary

On November 5, 2026, Google clarified its new K-12 policy after educators and parents reacted to ambiguous launch messaging. Schools using Google apps must explicitly enable its AI portfolio for logged-in student accounts. Administrators can disable Gemini, Gemini Notebook and Gemini in Classroom while retaining Search, or reject all AI, removing Search while preserving other Google apps. Google says the policy announced earlier in the week has not changed.

Schools can currently block the Gemini app, but AI Overviews and AI Mode remain in Search. Under the new controls, Search becomes a separate choice, but not an AI-free one: schools enabling it must select standard AI features or Guided Learning, which Google claims provides direct answers less readily. Educators wanting conventional web search without AI remain unserved, while switching providers is difficult because competing indexes have gaps. Google’s loss in the Department of Justice search antitrust case will require limited rival access to its web index, potentially strengthening alternatives.

Positives

  • Schools can disable Gemini, Gemini Notebook and Gemini in Classroom while keeping Search available to logged-in students.
  • Schools rejecting all AI can remove Search while continuing to use other Google apps.
  • Search becomes a separate administrative choice instead of remaining active alongside blocked Gemini apps.
  • Guided Learning is designed to provide answers less readily than Google’s standard AI search features.
  • Google’s antitrust loss will give competitors limited access to its web index, potentially improving alternative search services.

Risks & concerns

  • Google still offers no way for schools to use Search without AI features.
  • Enabling Search requires either standard AI tools or Guided Learning, leaving no conventional search option.
  • AI Overviews and AI Mode currently remain available even when schools block the Gemini app.
  • Competing search indexes contain gaps, making migration from Google difficult for schools.
  • Google’s initially vague explanation triggered backlash and confusion among educators and parents.
