Summary

Google launched Dreambeans in India on Monday, its first market outside the U.S., on Android and iOS with English and 13 local languages, including Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Bengali. Introduced in June and opened to all eligible U.S. users aged 18 and older less than two months ago, the app uses Personal Intelligence across Calendar, Gemini, Gmail, Photos, Search and YouTube to generate illustrated stories without prompts. Google recently added Veo animations to selected stories. Product manager Gozde Oznur said India was chosen because of strong demand, widespread Google service use and high overlap among Gemini, Gmail and Photos users.

Sensor Tower estimates Dreambeans has logged nearly 55,000 U.S. downloads since June, with 63% arriving in September before downloads fell 84% month over month to about 5,500 in October. Its first 30 days after broad U.S. availability produced 29,000 downloads, compared with 7.4 million for Meta’s Muse, 2.8 million for ChatGPT, 362,000 for Grok Bot and 155,000 for Claude, although those apps serve broader purposes.

Dreambeans reads multilingual account data but generates stories in only one selected language, excluding combinations such as Hinglish. Users can choose or disconnect services, delete Dreambeans data, remove underlying information and block subjects including business content. Stories are private and limited to personal Gmail accounts, but sensitive data access and potentially upsetting memories, including people who have died, remain risks. Google is exploring ways to turn recommendations into actions.

Positives

  • 13 Indian languages plus English give Dreambeans broad regional reach across Android and iOS.
  • Veo now animates images in selected stories instead of limiting Dreambeans to static illustrations.
  • Users can choose connected Google services, disconnect them anytime and delete Dreambeans data.
  • Deleted information from connected services is also removed from Dreambeans’ personalization system, Gozde Oznur said.
  • Google is exploring tools that would help users act on Dreambeans recommendations.

Risks & concerns

  • October U.S. downloads fell 84% month over month to about 5,500, following September’s expansion.
  • 29,000 downloads during broad U.S. availability trailed Meta’s Muse at 7.4 million and ChatGPT at 2.8 million.
  • One-language story generation cannot accommodate Hinglish or other common forms of multilingual code-switching.
  • Personal Intelligence can access sensitive information across Gmail, Photos, Calendar, Search and other connected services.
  • Dreambeans may unexpectedly surface upsetting memories, including stories involving people who have died.
  • Personal Gmail requirements exclude enterprise account holders from using Dreambeans.
