Google Polar Peaks Brings AI Brain Mapping to Students
Google and Stanford launch Polar Peaks, an AI brain-mapping quest for ages 11 to 14, plus teacher training after 400,000 completions across 10 languages.
Summary
On October 26, 2026, Google Research and the Stanford Accelerator for Learning launched Polar Peaks, the third AI Quests lesson for students ages 11 to 14. More than 400,000 quests have been completed across 10 languages. The first two quests teach flood forecasting and eye disease detection, drawing on Google Research’s Flood Forecasting initiative and its AI model for diabetic retinopathy screening.
Guided by in-game mentors, Polar Peaks students clean data, test models and map neurons while investigating a character’s memory loss, learning that AI requires human oversight and critical thinking. The quest draws on more than a decade of Google connectomics research. Finishers hear from two researchers involved in real breakthroughs, including the recent complete fruit fly brain map, the largest brain map by neuron count. Teacher modules are joining the Google AI Educator Series, with modules for Quests 1 and 2 available now and Quest 3’s due in November 2026. AI Quests won a 2026 Webby Award for AI Education, Learning & Training and the ETIH Innovation Award for Best Global K-12 Learning Solution. Google plans more quests in more classrooms during the 2026 to 2027 school year.
Positives

- Polar Peaks gives students ages 11 to 14 practical experience cleaning data, testing models and mapping neurons.
- Over a decade of Google connectomics research grounds the lesson in real scientific work.
- The complete fruit fly brain map exposes students to the largest brain map yet measured by neuron count.
- Two 2026 awards recognized AI Quests for AI education and global K-12 learning innovation.
Risks & concerns
- Quest 3’s teacher training module will arrive in November 2026, one month after Polar Peaks launches.
- AI still requires careful human oversight and critical thinking, a central limitation taught throughout the quest.
- Localization covers 10 languages, leaving the program’s accessibility in other languages unclear.
