Summary

On Thursday, August 20, 2026, Google introduced an interactive Preferred Sources button that online publishers can embed on their sites. Readers can designate a publisher as a favorite, increasing how often its links are highlighted across Google Search, Discover and Google News. Google expanded Preferred Sources to AI Mode and AI Overviews in May after earlier offering it in Top Stories. By May, users had selected more than 345,000 unique sources.

Readers can also add publishers by searching their names or websites on Google’s source preferences page. Google says its earlier studies found users were twice as likely to visit an available preferred source, positioning the tool as relief for traffic dependent publishers losing visits to AI powered search.

Google will soon let readers adjust Discover within the Google app by opening any three dot menu and using natural language to request more or less of specific topics, refining recommendations immediately. Android users will also be able to personalize audio daily briefings in the Google News app. Google joins unnamed major social media apps that have recently introduced user-controlled recommendation algorithms.

Positives

  • More than 345,000 unique sources had been selected through Preferred Sources by May.
  • Google’s earlier studies found users were twice as likely to visit a preferred source when one was available.
  • Publishers can embed the new button directly on their websites, simplifying the process of becoming a reader’s favorite source.
  • Natural language controls will let Discover users refine recommended topics in real time.
  • Android users will gain controls for personalizing audio daily briefings in the Google News app.

Risks & concerns

  • AI powered search features have damaged traffic dependent publishing businesses by reducing visits to their websites.
  • Preferred Sources requires readers to actively choose publishers through an embedded button or Google’s preferences page.
  • Google cited earlier click-through studies, while the article provided no current traffic results from the newly embedded button.
  • Discover language controls and Android audio briefing customization remain forthcoming rather than immediately available.
