Hinge Tests Cheaper Subscription as Match Group Battles Dating App Fatigue

Hinge tests a lower-cost plan as users tire of dating apps, while strong growth, new social formats and faster Tinder recommendations shape Match Group.

Summary

Match Group used its third-quarter 2026 earnings call to disclose a cheaper Hinge subscription with additional filters and custom location boundaries, aimed particularly at women and price-sensitive users. CFO Steve Bailey said Hinge earns around $30 per payer, almost twice Tinder’s figure, but its payer penetration is only slightly more than half Tinder’s. As of November 3, 2026, Match Group had not disclosed the new tier’s price.

Hinge nevertheless outperformed Tinder: global monthly active users rose 12% year over year, direct revenue from subscriptions and in-app purchases increased 19% to $221 million, and paying users climbed 23% to 2.3 million. Tinder generated $480 million in direct revenue, down 2%, while paid users fell 4% to 8.9 million. The cheaper test reverses Hinge’s 2023 experiment with a premium tier and could convert more users without demanding the same upfront spending.

Lower pricing does not resolve fatigue with subscriptions, endless swiping and dating apps themselves. Match Group plans to expand Group Hangouts and Events in the fourth quarter, while Tinder will begin testing real-time adaptive recommendations that react within seconds instead of hours. The recommendation system was announced during Match Group’s CEO Connection presentation in September and is intended to improve relevance and personalization.
