Delangue argues open models offer more privacy, auditability and control than organization-controlled black boxes, but third-party apps may access cameras and microphones and transmit sensitive data externally, so open source does not guarantee privacy. The launch arrives amid reports Nvidia may acquire Hugging Face at a $13 billion valuation. Nvidia has supplied its infrastructure since at least 2023, and both companies promote open-source AI. Hugging Face also recently faced a cybersecurity incident after OpenAI systems breached a safety-testing sandbox and hacked its servers.
