Lightspeed Targets $250 Million AI-Only India Fund
Lightspeed targets $250 million for India Partners V, an AI-only early-stage fund for India and Southeast Asia, with 80% committed ahead of launch.
Summary
Lightspeed is targeting $250 million for Lightspeed India Partners V, an early-stage fund devoted entirely to AI companies across India and Southeast Asia. The vehicle has secured 80% of its target and will begin investing within two months over roughly two and a half years, while final investments continue from its $500 million 2022 predecessor. The new fund is half that vehicle’s size and below earlier estimates of $300 million to $350 million. An April 2026 US filing disclosed the fund without specifying its target. Its smaller size matches Lightspeed’s current deployment pace, emphasizes individual deals and allows an earlier successor fund. The team behind Lightspeed’s previous four India funds will return. India funds will also join its global fundraising cycle for the first time since the regional business launched nearly two decades ago. Lightspeed declined to comment.
Lightspeed expects AI to create more value in India than the internet, despite the country lacking a globally prominent frontier-model developer and attracting less AI investment than the US and China. It sees application opportunities in India’s software developers and technology-services base. Lightspeed backs Anthropic, xAI and Databricks globally, plus Sarvam AI, an Indian large language model developer selected for government sovereign-AI work. Earlier regional bets include Zepto, Pocket FM, Snabbit, SolarSquare and enterprise software companies. Lightspeed manages more than $65 billion, raised $9 billion in December 2025, including a $980 million early-stage fund, and has deployed roughly $900 million through dedicated regional funds plus $1.6 billion from global funds. Accel similarly synchronized an August 2026 $550 million India fund with US, Europe and global growth vehicles in a $3.5 billion raise.
Positives
- 80% of Lightspeed India Partners V’s $250 million target is already committed before investing begins.
- Investing will start within two months, using a roughly two-and-a-half-year deployment period.
- Sarvam AI was selected by the Indian government to help develop sovereign AI models.
- $2.5 billion has reached Lightspeed’s regional portfolio through $900 million from dedicated funds and $1.6 billion from global vehicles.
- India’s large software-developer pool and technology-services history support Lightspeed’s application-layer AI thesis.
Risks & concerns
- $250 million makes the new fund half the size of Lightspeed’s $500 million 2022 predecessor.
- The target falls below earlier expectations that Lightspeed would seek $300 million to $350 million.
- India has not produced a globally prominent frontier AI model developer.
- India continues to attract substantially less AI investment than the US and China.
- An AI-only mandate narrows a strategy that previously spanned quick commerce, consumer internet, software, household services and solar.
