Lucid EV Output Falls 54% to Near Two Year Low as Rivian Surges

Lucid built 2,954 EVs in Q3 2026, down 54%, as weak demand drives layoffs, factory cuts and a delayed Cosmos while Rivian accelerates with its new R2 SUV.

Summary

Lucid Motors built 2,954 EVs in Q3 2026, down 54% from a year earlier, after deliberately curbing production to match demand. The October 5 figures marked a third consecutive quarterly decline and the lowest output since Q1 2025, just after production began on its second EV, the Gravity SUV. Deliveries totaled 3,806, roughly flat with Q2 and about 200 below Q3 2025. Lucid has struggled to sell its first two luxury EVs and produced more than it delivered in five of the past six quarters.

New CEO Silvio Napoli’s simplification drive includes about 1,500 layoffs, streamlined leadership, elimination of a second shift at Lucid’s Arizona factory and targeted savings of $1.4 billion. Lucid also delayed Cosmos, its third EV, which is expected to start below $50,000. Napoli said during August’s Q2 earnings call that Lucid had executed inconsistently, missed commitments, launched unfinished products, underinvested in service, addressed quality problems too slowly and allowed complexity to impede decisions. He pledged not to release Cosmos prematurely.

Rivian shipped nearly 20,000 vehicles in Q3, its best quarter, up from 12,194 in Q2 as the more affordable R2 completed its first full production quarter, although R2 deliveries were not disclosed separately. Lucid’s performance remains far below its 2021 projection of up to 90,000 deliveries in 2024, made when its special purpose acquisition company merger raised $4 billion.

Positives

  • 3,806 Q3 deliveries exceeded Lucid’s production by 852 vehicles as output was adjusted toward demand.
  • $1.4 billion in targeted savings accompanies layoffs, leadership streamlining and the removal of an Arizona factory shift.
  • Cosmos is expected to start below $50,000, potentially opening a broader market than Lucid’s two luxury EVs.
  • Nearly 20,000 Rivian shipments made Q3 its best quarter, up from 12,194 in Q2 during the R2’s first full production quarter.
  • Silvio Napoli pledged to delay Cosmos rather than repeat Lucid’s earlier mistake of launching products before they were ready.

Risks & concerns

  • 2,954 vehicles built represented a 54% annual decline, Lucid’s third consecutive quarterly drop and its lowest output since Q1 2025.
  • Five of the past six quarters ended with Lucid producing more vehicles than it delivered, reflecting persistent difficulty finding buyers.
  • About 1,500 employees are being laid off as Lucid cuts costs and eliminates a second shift at its Arizona factory.
  • Cosmos, Lucid’s planned sub-$50,000 third EV, has been delayed despite its importance to reaching more buyers.
  • Lucid’s Q3 deliveries were about 200 below Q3 2025 and remained dramatically short of its 2021 projection for 90,000 deliveries in 2024.
  • Napoli acknowledged missed commitments, premature launches, weak service investment, slow quality responses and excessive organizational complexity.
