Microsoft’s Singapore AI Lab Scales Research After First Year
Microsoft’s Singapore research lab marks its first year with nine new projects, 300 summer school students, healthcare AI work and deeper partnerships.

By September 28, 2026, Microsoft Research Asia Singapore, led by Microsoft corporate vice president Lidong Zhou, had marked its first year as Microsoft’s first Southeast Asian research lab after opening July 24, 2025. MSRA, founded in 1998, now operates in Beijing, Shanghai, Vancouver, Tokyo and Singapore. Its four priorities are next-generation models and agents, domain AI, AI-native research and talent development. Work includes multimodal healthcare AI and self-evolving diagnostic agents for clinical decisions, diagnosis, risk assessment and personalized care, plus financial services, education and technology projects aligned with Singapore’s National AI Strategy 2.0.
EDB backed the launch and IPP PhD training, then co-hosted a February 2026 logistics and transportation roundtable with more than 10 industry leaders. IMDA co-hosted Singapore Day in July 2025 on healthcare, interactive world simulators, agents and societal AI; the lab also engaged the trade and health ministries. More than 75 Singapore projects since 2004 were joined by nine first-year NUS and NTU projects. A five-year NUS agreement announced in 2025 covers healthcare, societal AI, spatial intelligence and data-intensive computing. Mike Shou and Xinxing Xu study multimodal healthcare, Yang You and Furu Wei diffusion language-model systems, and Jialin Li multi-agent agreement and verifiable machine learning.
The three-day NUS summer school has reached more than 300 students since 2025, featuring Doug Burger and Zhou. Partnerships include SMU and A*STAR, with work published at ICLR and COLM. Qiming Huang, the first Singapore IPP student, earned a CVPR 2026 oral presentation for RobotSeg. Stars of Tomorrow has engaged more than 90 Singapore students, while 13 students have won MSRA fellowships. An NTU student of former intern Ziwei Liu was Asia’s only 2025 to 2026 global Fellowship recipient, and Jianfei Yang now collaborates on robotics and IPP supervision. Year two will scale successful partnerships and demonstrate broader impact.
