NHTSA Proposes Cyan AV Lights as GM, Tesla and Rivian Accelerate Autonomy

NHTSA proposes cyan lights for driverless cars as GM, Rivian, Waymo, Tesla and aviation startups advance autonomy and funding plans into 2027.

Summary

NHTSA proposed optional, steady cyan lights visible on all four sides to identify vehicles operating autonomously without a human occupant monitoring the road. Specifications cover mounting, color and activation while dropping manual controls for turn signals, high beams and hazards. Administrator Jonathan Morrison linked the move to safe, faster adoption, a federal AV framework and updated FMVSS, whose pedal, steering-wheel and mirror rules do not fit Tesla Cybercab and Zoox robotaxis.

GM will debut a new electrical and computing architecture, faster software and conversational AI updating its 30-year-old OnStar in the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ. Also in 2028, highway automation promises hands-off, eyes-off travel without takeover readiness, while enterprise AI aims to halve four- to five-year development. GM is closing its Celestiq and Corvette E-Ray battery-pack plant south of Detroit, which also made E-Ray drive units, because its lease is ending, not its EV strategy. Google Gemini will personalize vehicles through Gmail, Calendar, YouTube, Maps, Search history and connected services.

Rivian acquired Third Dimension, a 15-engineer UK simulation startup that raised $7 million; terms were undisclosed, and no SEC filing indicated immaterial size. Autonomy chief James Philbin targets the sim-to-real gap. inDrive, Pony.ai and Nvidia plan 2027 Kazakhstan robotaxi tests. Reliable Robotics raised $115 million, including $90 million equity led by Nimble Partners and $25 million Silicon Valley Bank debt, taking Series D funding to $275 million and valuation above $1 billion. Elon Musk said Tesla and SpaceX formed merger committees; SpaceX AI generated $7.5 billion, 52% of income, while flat Tesla revenue and rising costs cut profit 43%. Tesla began Optimus production, grew FSD subscriptions, delayed unsupervised FSD to Q2 2027 and targets customer Cybercab sales by end-2026. Waymo plans Madrid service in 2027 and now serves Las Vegas airport.

Positives

  • GM’s 2028 Escalade IQ will introduce its new computing architecture, conversational OnStar AI and highway automation requiring neither road monitoring nor takeover readiness.
  • Reliable Robotics raised $115 million, expanding its Series D to $275 million and lifting its valuation above $1 billion.
  • inDrive, Pony.ai and Nvidia signed an agreement to explore robotaxi testing in Kazakhstan during 2027.
  • Waymo plans to open Madrid robotaxi service in 2027 and has begun serving Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas.
  • Third Dimension gives Rivian 15 engineers and technology for converting driving images and video into lifelike 3D simulations.
  • RJ Scaringe sees autonomy enabling Rivian vehicles beyond the R1S and R2 SUVs, with attention turning to R4.

Risks & concerns

  • Tesla’s profit fell 43% year over year as companywide revenue remained flat and expenses increased.
  • Tesla delayed unsupervised FSD until Q2 2027 despite reporting subscription growth and beginning Optimus production.
  • NHTSA’s cyan autonomy lights would remain optional, potentially limiting the uniform vehicle identification regulators are seeking.
  • Third Dimension’s acquisition price remains undisclosed, although the absence of an SEC filing indicates the deal was not financially material to Rivian.
  • GM is closing its battery-pack and drive-unit plant south of Detroit because the site’s lease is nearing expiration.
  • The Coalition for Accountability and Road Safety was registered to an employee of a New York lobbying firm previously retained by unions and an industry compensation fund.
