OpenAI and Google Image Models Fail 13% of Jailbreak Tests
White Circle says simple API attacks bypassed Google and OpenAI image safeguards 13% of the time as AI-generated CSAM surged 40% in early 2026, amid audit calls
Summary
White Circle’s September 2026 preprint found that its Red-teaming via Iterative Strategy Evolution method, or RISE, bypassed safeguards in DALL·E 3, Google’s Nano Banana 2 and GPT-Image-2, generating explicit content in 13 percent of attempts, the highest rate under the same testing standard. RISE paired a Qwen attacker downloaded from Hugging Face with Gemini 3.8 Flash as judge, requiring only public tools and API calls. Follow-up tests found the newer ChatGPT Images 2.5 and Nano Banana 2.1 significantly more breakable than their predecessors. Google and OpenAI did not respond to the findings.
A Google co-authored July study covering the United States, Australia and United Kingdom found nonconsensual sexual images often circulate through messages and private clouds. Among users admitting they made AI nudes, 20 percent cited fun or jokes and nearly one-third cited experimentation. The Internet Watch Foundation found 6,310 AI images legally classed as child sexual abuse material during the first half of 2026, about 40 percent above the full-year 2025 total, including depictions of children under two. White Circle plans to publish its pipeline on GitHub, present it at NeurIPS 2026 in November and pursue mandatory independent testing with government officials. RISE could also test defenses against hacking, graphic violence and self-harm.
Positives
- White Circle will open-source the RISE attack pipeline on GitHub so developers and policymakers can reproduce its safety tests.
- NeurIPS 2026 will host White Circle’s findings in November, increasing scrutiny of image-generator safeguards.
- RISE can rapidly probe defenses against explicit imagery, hacking, graphic violence and self-harm using widely available models.
- White Circle has begun government discussions about mandatory independent audits and third-party monitoring of frontier AI systems.
- The Internet Watch Foundation is pressing UK regulators for a framework requiring AI companies to prevent generated child sexual abuse material.
Risks & concerns
- RISE produced prohibited explicit images in 13 percent of attempts, the highest bypass rate measured under the same standard.
- ChatGPT Images 2.5 and Nano Banana 2.1 were significantly more breakable than the models they replaced.
- 6,310 AI-generated CSAM images were identified in early 2026, about 40 percent above the entire 2025 total.
- Google and OpenAI did not respond after receiving findings about vulnerabilities in their current and newer image models.
- Public Qwen and Gemini models, downloadable tools and API access were sufficient to defeat frontier safeguards without specialist expertise.
- OpenAI and Anthropic backed restrictive non-disclosure agreements for external evaluators, potentially limiting public disclosure of critical failures.
