Outer Biosciences Trains AI on Living Human Skin to Find Cosmetic Ingredients

Outer Biosciences uses monthlong living human skin tests and AI to find cosmetic ingredients, with six leads, $23 million raised and commercialization ahead.

Summary

Michael Polansky founded Outer Biosciences in 2022 and is CEO. The 19 person company has raised roughly $23 million from Calm Capital, Brighter Capital, Polansky’s Hawktail and others; all employees except him work near Cambridge, Massachusetts. His partner, Stefani Germanotta, Lady Gaga, is a director; Outer has joint projects with her roughly 70 employee Haus Labs, advised by Outer chief scientist Kyung Jin Jang.

Outer receives deidentified, consented skin discarded mainly after plastic surgery within hours through IRB overseen suppliers, principally the National Disease Research Interchange and Cooperative Human Tissue Network, which receive NIH and National Cancer Institute funding. After two years building this pipeline, Outer’s nutrient and waste removal system keeps tissue viable up to a month, versus the usual days, enabling observation of UVB injury, collagen remodeling, pigmentation and barrier repair. A closed loop AI proposes chemicals, tests them on diverse living samples and learns from repeated molecular results. Literature mining and an NCI natural compounds partnership produced a couple of leads in about 18 months; AI now generates a candidate roughly every six weeks, with six active leads and several dozen hits.

Outer targets cosmetics, not drugs, so candidates need an industry name and OECD safety tests accepted across 40 plus countries, rather than FDA approval. The FDA permits about 120 to 130 ingredients across 13 over the counter skin drug categories; Polansky estimates roughly 200 including researched cosmetics. Four of six leads may commercialize through sales or licenses; collaborations already generate revenue, including a pharma study of cancer drug rashes. Rival Vivodyne disclosed nearly $80 million in August 2026, including $38 million seed and $40 million Series A rounds led by Khosla Ventures. Outer keeps AI on premise to protect unique data and next plans product development hiring for formulation, manufacturing, supply chains and safety.

Positives

  • Monthlong tissue viability extends experiments beyond the industry norm of several days, enabling observation of slower skin processes.
  • One AI generated candidate every six weeks marks a sharp improvement over the couple of leads found during the previous 18 months.
  • Four of six active leads appear likely to reach commercialization through ingredient sales or licensing.
  • Roughly $23 million from Calm Capital, Brighter Capital, Hawktail and others supports a 19 person operation.
  • Several dozen additional hits and revenue generating research partnerships provide options beyond the six active leads.

Risks & concerns

  • Thirty day tissue retains much of its original architecture and molecular behavior but is not fully indistinguishable from day one skin.
  • No single government tissue network qualifies buyers, although Outer uses consented, deidentified samples from overseen suppliers.
  • Formulation, manufacturing scale up, supply chains and safety testing remain manual tasks for the scientists discovering compounds.
  • Nearly $80 million raised by Vivodyne signals well funded competition from lab grown tissue and predictive AI.
  • Outer has not settled whether to sell ingredients, license discoveries or reorganize around one breakout compound.
