Summary

On September 14, 2026, Perplexity added Portable Computer to its Windows app for compatible NVIDIA GeForce RTX PCs and RTX PRO Workstations with at least 24GB of VRAM. The local version of Perplexity Computer plans and executes multistep jobs, analyzes and combines data across files, and automates recurring work on-device, keeping sensitive information local and avoiding Computer credit use. It can escalate advanced research or reasoning to cloud models, but identifies the need and requests permission before sending data off-device. The launch extends support from NVIDIA DGX Spark and RTX PCs running Linux. DGX Station support is expected soon.

Setup includes a local model such as Qwen 3.8 27B, post-trained for Perplexity Computer and optimized for NVIDIA RTX GPUs, avoiding manual model selection and complex software configuration. Portable Computer uses Computer’s built-in browser and proprietary SPACE sandbox, plus Microsoft Outlook, OneDrive, Word, Google Drive, Gmail, Slack and GitHub connectors. It can sort open GitHub pull requests by status, identify next steps, flag stale documentation and submit updates for review. It can also trace avoidable fees and tax drag across two years of brokerage summaries, consolidated 1099s and tax returns with every figure tied to its file and page, or inspect a startup funnel for activation drop-offs between installation and the first completed task, then post findings to Slack.

Positives

  • On-device processing keeps sensitive files local and does not consume Perplexity Computer credits.
  • Qwen 3.8 27B is post-trained for Perplexity Computer and optimized for NVIDIA RTX GPUs, simplifying local AI setup.
  • Seven connectors link Portable Computer with Outlook, OneDrive, Word, Google Drive, Gmail, Slack and GitHub.
  • Cloud escalation requires user permission before information leaves the PC.
  • GitHub, finance and startup workflows demonstrate multistep analysis with citations, proposed updates and direct Slack delivery.

Risks & concerns

  • A minimum of 24GB of VRAM limits Portable Computer to higher-end GeForce RTX and RTX PRO hardware.
  • Information can leave the device when users approve cloud support for advanced research or reasoning.
  • NVIDIA DGX Station support is not available yet and is only expected soon.
  • Pricing and support for Windows PCs without compatible NVIDIA GPUs were not detailed.
