Summary

On Monday, September 28, 2026, Shopify opened checkout to browser based AI agents, while Amazon and apparently Adidas are blocking agent purchases. Shopify’s existing WebMCP support let agents search merchant inventory, find products and build carts. Checkout support, including Shop Pay, now lets them read, modify and submit transactions with buyer authorization, using structured tools instead of screenshots, webpage scraping or HTML designed for humans.

The three tools are get_checkout, which inspects checkout, update_checkout, which changes details such as addresses and delivery options, and complete_checkout, which places authorized orders. Staff product manager Gil Greenberg said they are rolling out to all eligible Shopify merchants. Shopify also offers a hosted Model Context Protocol server for server to server agents, while the proposed WebMCP standard serves agents inside buyers’ browsers. Both use Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol for product discovery, carts and checkout, including accurate commerce data, required disclosures and handoffs. Muse and Instinct have direct agentic commerce partnerships with Shopify, with Instinct’s announced September 28.

  • Muse and Instinct have direct Shopify partnerships for agentic commerce.

Risks & concerns

  • WebMCP remains a proposed standard rather than a finalized industry standard.
  • The rollout covers eligible Shopify merchants, but eligibility criteria were not detailed.
  • Browser agents cannot complete transactions without explicit buyer authorization.
