Starcloud Raises $250 Million for Orbital AI as Rocket Capacity Tightens

Starcloud raises $250 million at a $2.3 billion valuation to build orbital AI data centers as launch scarcity and Starship delays threaten its expansion plans.

Summary

Starcloud added a $250 million extension to its March $170 million Series A, valuing the 25-employee orbital AI startup at $2.3 billion. Manhattan West Ventures led, with Nvidia, Cisco, Benchmark, EQT, Soma, NFX, 776, Cedar Capital, Goanna Capital and Standard Capital participating. A deal source said Nvidia invested $25 million. The cash will expand manufacturing at a 100,000-square-foot Woodinville, Washington facility near SpaceX and Amazon satellite plants, and advance Starcloud-3 for SpaceX’s forthcoming Starship.

CEO Philip Johnston is also reserving scarce launch capacity for a proposed 88,000-spacecraft network after requesting FCC permission. Two 8 kW Starcloud-2 compute satellites are slated for 2027 rideshares to run inference for customers including U.S. government agencies. Starcloud may buy a dedicated Falcon 9 flight and contract other providers. Planning is tightening because SpaceX expects Falcon 9 to end in 2028, Starship remains unproven, Blue Origin’s New Glenn and ULA’s Vulcan lack regular service, and Rocket Lab’s Neutron has not reached the pad. Launch costs have already driven one rival to build rockets. Johnston said failure to secure SpaceX capacity in 2029 would be challenging. This week, Elon Musk delayed a returning Starship catch attempt by months and targeted its first vehicle reflight for year-end or early 2027.

TechCrunch says Starcloud uniquely operates an Nvidia H100 terrestrial data center GPU in orbit and first trained a model there through Starcloud One. Its data supports Nvidia’s development of Vera Rubin Space-1, which Starcloud hopes to fly in late 2028. Engineers are balancing chip temperature against radiator size, placing radiation shielding and ruggedizing the unbuilt processor for launch. Starcloud’s economics ultimately depend on rapid, frequent Starship reuse making orbital inference competitive with terrestrial data centers.

Positives

  • Starcloud’s $250 million extension values the company at $2.3 billion and funds a larger factory plus Starcloud-3 development.
  • Two 8 kW Starcloud-2 satellites are scheduled for 2027 rideshares serving customers including U.S. government agencies.
  • Nvidia invested $25 million, according to a deal source, and is using Starcloud One data to develop Vera Rubin Space-1.
  • Starcloud operates the only known Nvidia H100 terrestrial data center GPU in orbit and says it first trained a model there.
  • A 100,000-square-foot Woodinville facility will support new production lines as Starcloud expands beyond its current 25 employees.

Risks & concerns

  • SpaceX expects Falcon 9 service to end in 2028 before the larger, still unproven Starship has demonstrated rapid, frequent reuse.
  • Elon Musk delayed Starship’s returning-rocket catch attempt by months, while its first vehicle reflight is targeted for year-end or early 2027.
  • Blue Origin’s New Glenn and ULA’s Vulcan lack regular service, while Rocket Lab’s Neutron has not reached the launch pad.
  • Philip Johnston said an inability to book SpaceX launch capacity in 2029 would challenge Starcloud’s orbital data center plans.
  • Nvidia’s Vera Rubin Space-1 remains unbuilt, with radiator sizing, radiation shielding and launch ruggedization still under development.
