Waymo, Wayve and Aurora Choose Different Paths to Autonomous Vehicle Scale
Waymo concentrates 80% of 4,000 robotaxis in California and Texas as Wayve, Aurora and rivals pursue partnerships, fleets and public markets for scale.

Autonomous vehicle developers are choosing distinct routes to commercialization. Wayve signed Mercedes-Benz to put its Level 2 automated-driving system, which still requires driver attention, into at least one model within two years, adding to Nissan and Stellantis agreements that also support Level 4 ambitions. Wayve, Nissan and Uber plan a Tokyo robotaxi service. Waymo has roughly 4,000 robotaxis, with about 80% registered in California and Texas. Its Texas fleet jumped more than 49% in three weeks, while it also targets teenagers.
Aurora CEO Chris Urmson says the self-driving truck company has moved beyond its building stage. Aurora plans more than 200 driverless trucks by the end of 2026 and over 30,000 by 2030, combining a Texas focus with multiple partners. Zoox grounded Toyota Highlander test vehicles in Atlanta after safety drivers became ill amid possible carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulfide exposure. Zoox found only carbon dioxide. OSHA opened an inquiry after a worker complaint and ordered an investigation. Comma, founded by George Hotz, faces a federal investigation into five crashes involving its aftermarket hands-off driver assistance, including two that killed three people.
