Google Expands Gemini AI Language Tools to Reach Over 7 Billion People
Google expands AI language tools across 300 languages, adding live speech, open datasets, offline translation and sign language access for billions of users.

Language Explorer visualizes LinguaMeta, mapping over 7,000 spoken, written and signed languages. Google.org supports the Centre for Digital Language Inclusion and AI Singapore’s Project Aquarium for farmers, healthcare workers and teachers.
With over 3 billion people lacking reliable internet and hundreds of millions limited to feature phones, TranslateGemma runs on device across 55 languages, while Viamo’s Gemini based Ask Viamo Anything, piloted in Rwanda, has answered over 2 million questions. Sign Language to Text, trained across more than 50 sign languages, starts with ASL to English dictation in Gboard and Live Transcribe on Pixel 11, targeting 70 million sign language users. Google also worked with Māori experts on Maps pronunciations in New Zealand. Hardware, connectivity and poor representation remain barriers as community partnerships and language coverage expand.
