Indonesia Opens First University AI Center With UGM, Indosat and NVIDIA
UGM, Indosat, NVIDIA and Komdigi open Indonesia's first university AI center, backing local talent and projects in TB, farming and disaster response.

During the week ending Aug. 14, 2026, Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, Komdigi, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, NVIDIA and Universitas Gadjah Mada launched the UGM Indosat NVIDIA AI Technology Center in Yogyakarta, Indonesia’s first university based AI technology center. Created under the AI Center of Excellence initiative, it unites government, industry and academia around national priorities. NVIDIA’s full stack AI platform and Indosat’s sovereign GPU Merdeka service provide UGM researchers and students with enterprise grade accelerated computing, AI software, open source pretrained models, development frameworks, technical mentorship and global expertise. Indosat President Director and CEO Vikram Sinha said access would extend to researchers, students, startups and innovators nationwide. NVIDIA Vice President Marc Hamilton pledged NVIDIA Nemotron open models and expertise. Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country, but its researchers have historically lacked sufficient compute, models and infrastructure.
Three initial projects target healthcare, agriculture and disasters. UGM’s Faculty of Medicine Public Health and Nursing team, led by dr. Dian Kesumapramudya Nurputra, M.Sc, Ph.D, SpA, is developing eNose-TB to detect tuberculosis from breath samples without specialists or expensive laboratories in a country recording over 1 million new cases annually. SmartAgri combines satellite imagery, sensors, local knowledge, multimodal AI and edge computing to guide irrigation for smallholders in a sector employing nearly 30% of Indonesians. Tech4Disaster uses NVIDIA accelerated computing to process geospatial satellite and sensor data, seeking earlier warnings, stronger situational awareness and faster emergency coordination across the disaster-prone Pacific Ring of Fire.
