Laytr Takes On Pocket With a Private Save Anything App
Laytr saves articles, videos, PDFs and more in a private iCloud archive, with reminders, Pocket imports and plans starting at $1.99 monthly on Apple devices.
Summary
Following Mozilla’s Pocket shutdown in August, Ontario indie developer Mostafa Talaat built Laytr through Waitery Inc. As of October 2, 2026, the app saves articles, recipes, screenshots, videos, PDFs, bookmarks and tabs, automatically sorts formats, and organizes items into collections called cases. Date-based reminders resurface saves for reading, events or visits, while Pocket export imports help users migrate existing archives.
Laytr requires no account or server, stores its private archive on the user’s device and iCloud, and syncs across iPhone, iPad and Mac without giving the developer access. That privacy model excludes personalized feeds, AI summaries and automatic tags. The free tier allows 30 items; Premium costs $1.99 monthly, $14.99 annually or $39.99 for life, with lifetime access discounted to $24.99 until the end of December 2026. Lapsed subscribers retain their saves but cannot add more until renewing or reducing the archive below 30 items. Users can export everything as a ZIP containing readable Markdown and HTML for every item, note, tag, date and case. Talaat plans to add more languages.
Positives
- Laytr supports articles, recipes, screenshots, videos, PDFs, bookmarks and tabs instead of limiting users to reading material.
- No account or server is required, keeping saved content on the user’s devices and personal iCloud.
- Pocket export imports let former Pocket users move existing archives into Laytr without starting over.
- Date-based reminders resurface saved items when users plan to read, attend an event or visit a place.
- ZIP exports include readable Markdown and HTML for every item, note, tag, date and case.
- Lapsed subscribers retain access to their saved archives even when they cannot add new items.
Risks & concerns
- The free tier limits archives to 30 saved items before requiring deletion or Premium access.
- Laytr omits personalized feeds, AI summaries and automatic tagging because of its privacy-focused architecture.
- Cross-device syncing is limited to the Apple ecosystem through iPhone, iPad, Mac and iCloud.
- Expired subscriptions prevent new saves until users renew or reduce their archives below the free limit.
- Additional languages remain a future plan, while current language availability is not specified.
