Apple Watch Audio Intelligence Beta Tests Live Rewind and Siri Recaps
Apple begins developer beta tests of Audio Intelligence on Apple Watch, adding Live Rewind, Siri Recaps, sound alerts and Shazam song recognition tools.
Summary
Apple began developer beta testing Audio Intelligence through iOS 27.3 on November 3, 2026, after unveiling it at September’s Surprise and Shine event. Four opt-in tools let Apple Watch Series 12 users recognize sirens, alarms and doorbells, aiding deaf users and those with hearing loss, identify music through Shazam, revisit speech with Live Rewind and generate Siri Recaps. The system also supports Apple Watch Ultra 4.
Live Rewind converts the previous 15 seconds into condensed text after a double press of the digital crown, while a chime and animation signal capture. Users can ask Siri about the snippet, save it to the standalone Siri app shipped with iOS 27, or let it delete after 30 seconds. Siri Recaps creates a sentence and bullet points covering facts such as dates, deadlines, prices and payment plans, without identifying speakers, retaining raw audio, providing verbatim transcripts or adding emotion and tone. Users review recaps at day’s end and on their first morning unlock, save them to Notes or Journal, or let them expire within seven days. Recapping can run manually or on schedules, stops through Control Center, pauses during headphone music or noise cancellation, and omits government identifiers, financial, authentication and certain personal data, plus language promoting self-harm.
The S11 chip and microphone detect conversations involving the wearer, with secure enclaves protecting buffered audio and transfer to the paired iPhone. On-device Apple Intelligence removes filler words, encrypts condensed text and sends it to Private Cloud Compute for summarization; Apple says cloud outputs are deleted immediately, recaps remain inaccessible to Apple and device syncing is encrypted. Live Rewind uses similar phone processing. Apple claims no watch or phone battery impact. A public beta precedes general availability.
Positives
- Live Rewind provides a 15-second text recall window for missed directions, names or fast-moving presentations.
- Sound recognition alerts deaf users and those with hearing loss to sirens, alarms and doorbells.
- Thirty-second snippet deletion and seven-day recap expiration limit how long unsaved conversation data remains available.
- S11 secure enclaves, encrypted transfers and immediate Private Cloud Compute deletion reduce access to captured conversation data.
- Manual controls, schedules and Control Center access let wearers decide when Siri Recaps listens.
- Apple says Audio Intelligence will not reduce Apple Watch or iPhone battery life.
Risks & concerns
- Live Rewind and Siri Recaps listen to human conversations, a category already facing backlash around Meta AI glasses and other AI wearables.
- Siri Recaps sends encrypted condensed conversation text to Private Cloud Compute despite Apple’s immediate deletion and access safeguards.
- Audio Intelligence requires Apple Watch Series 12 or Apple Watch Ultra 4, excluding owners of earlier hardware.
- Siri Recaps cannot preserve speaker identities, raw audio, verbatim wording, emotion or tone.
- Recapping stops while users listen to headphone music or use noise cancellation, limiting availability in those situations.
