Summary

Garena, owned by Singapore based Sea, launched standalone game Free Fire India on Android and iOS on Wednesday, more than four years after New Delhi banned Free Fire over national security concerns. The localized release adds Indian content, parental controls, playtime limits, spending caps and domestic data hosting. Announced in September 2023, it was postponed for more than three years without explanation. Garena says it incorporated Indian government feedback but has not disclosed what enabled the launch.

India banned Free Fire and 53 other apps in February 2022 over alleged China links, wiping more than $16 billion from Sea’s market value in one day. Free Fire had expanded after rival PUBG Mobile was banned in September 2020. Garena’s unbanned Free Fire MAX remained available and will continue alongside Free Fire India, with shared accounts, multiplayer and events. South Korea’s Krafton responded to PUBG Mobile’s ban with Battlegrounds Mobile India, or BGMI, but Sensor Tower counted 77.4 million monthly Indian users for the Free Fire franchise in June versus BGMI’s 20.8 million.

Garena also developed India focused games through Pune and Mumbai studios, drawing on Hindu mythology, cricket and Ludo, although early access title Versus has disappeared from Google Play. India recorded 2 billion mobile game downloads in Q2, up 14.2% quarter over quarter, while revenue rose 3.7% beyond $106 million. Free Fire MAX teams S8UL Esports, Apex Gaming and Total Gaming competed at the Esports World Cup 2026. S8UL CEO Animesh Agarwal expects Free Fire India to expand opportunities for esports players and creators.

Positives

  • Free Fire India brings domestic data hosting, parental controls, playtime limits and spending caps to Android and iOS.
  • 77.4 million monthly Indian users in June gave the Free Fire franchise nearly four times BGMI’s 20.8 million.
  • Shared accounts, multiplayer and events will connect Free Fire India users with the continuing Free Fire MAX community.
  • 2 billion Q2 mobile game downloads, up 14.2% quarter over quarter, underline India’s scale as a gaming market.
  • S8UL Esports, Apex Gaming and Total Gaming competed through Free Fire MAX at the Esports World Cup 2026.

Risks & concerns

  • February 2022’s ban over alleged China links and national security concerns still shadows Free Fire’s regulatory position.
  • More than $16 billion vanished from Sea’s market value in one day after Free Fire was banned.
  • Garena has not explained the three year delay from September 2023 or what changed before approval.
  • Q2 mobile gaming revenue grew 3.7%, substantially slower than the 14.2% increase in downloads.
  • Versus, Garena’s previously available early access game, is no longer listed on Google Play.
